Penang's most famous Char Kuey Teow? We're here to check.

One of three supposedly famous char koay teow stalls in Lorong Selamat, its lady chef knows that she is good and won't hesitate to flip you off if she finds you irritating.

That was what we were told by local folks when we asked for details about this shop. Said to be one of the most famous char koay teow shop in Penang Island, we wanted to see for ourselves if such bold claims were true.

Well logically speaking, you can never really have the best of something because what is outstanding for some, may just be plain mediocre for others.

We had heard of the lady chef having a temper as big as the cost for setting up the Port Klang Free Zone and we wanted to see if we could piss her off by making all sorts of troublesome requests such as demanding our noodles to be fried longer, more chilli, less oil, etc.

HOW DO I GET HERE? Follow this Googlemaps link provided here!

We waited for about 20 minutes for our dish to arrive and we could consider ourselves to be lucky - we have heard of stories of people waiting for as long as an hour for theirs! The lady chef gets about up to 50 plates of order and yet people still do not mind waiting.

Sometimes we wonder why the hell do people even bother waiting.

One of the first things people will notice about the plate of char koay teow is it's gigantic, near ping-pong-sized prawns! If you love prawns, then you should be amazed by this dish.

Wait, you MUST be. Its one of the few reasons why this dish is popular anyway! This reason alone is also quite possibly why the price of a plate of char koay teow here is so expensive.

PRICE GUIDE? The cheapest plate of char koay teow which you can find from this cafe goes for as high as RM6. The largest plate, which boasts a price tag of RM8 is nearly as big as the small plates found in places like Petaling Jaya or Kuala Lumpur.

Nevermind the fact that a large plate here is almost a little smaller then a small plate of char koay teow in PJ/KL, some people say you are actually paying for the fame (kinda like buying Nike and Adidas shoes), but we reckon it is more of the cost price of the prawns.

The size is nearly double or triple compared to what you get elsewhere! Doesn't look like it from the picture, eh?

Apart from char koay teows, you also get other people coming along trying to sell you all kinds of food - from rojak to popiah to ice kacangs, they have them all. Do pay special attention to the fat lady who comes around giving you samples of her specially-made chicken floss and cracker rolls.

They are quite delicious and they cost about RM10-RM20 for each, depending on the size you want.

VERDICT?

THE GOOD - Big prawns, delicious noodles
THE UGLY - Long waiting list, hot environment, expensive

"Nice place to try out, but for an everday meal? Not quite. Plus, do you really want to waste all those hours of your life just waiting for a bowl of noodles?" - 76% (PISSINGLY GOOD)
